Transmission glitches bedevil new Sentra owner
Q: We have a new 2010 Nissan Sentra with a CVT transmission. At initial morning start-up, when temperatures are in the midteens, the CVT will not up-shift, causing high rpms (2,200 at 20 mph) until engine coolant reaches normal temperature (nine minutes). The vehicle has been left at the dealer four times for diagnosis. On the third visit, it was found that the car would not reverse nor exceed 30 mph — symptoms we never experienced. They then replaced the CVT. However, we still find the same problem in cold weather. On the fourth visit, we were told via testing that other Sentras operate similarly and that it is appropriate in cold weather to operate the vehicle up to 3,000 rpms at 30 mph and up to 60 mph to warm up the system. We would appreciate your opinion.
A: This problem has been going on for a few years with the Sentra. I would request a Nissan representative to meet with you, road-test the car with the problem and assign the problem a Nissan number for reference. It is my feeling that the software needs to be rewritten, and the problem will be gone. It's quite rare we get problem letters concerning the Sentra. I have strong expectations that Nissan will fix this problem. Please keep me posted.
